Normally a change from clear skies and windy conditions to overcast and slick conditions would be seen as a major conditional change, but given the extreme volatility the anglers in the Bull Shoals Division have faced at each event of the season, the relatively mild and consistent temperatures made it seems as only a minor shift. However, the change, no matter how dramatic, did affect the overall number of fish weighed, though, as it seems to always be the case, the top finishers made the adjustments to keep the big stringers coming as 23 teams blasted off from Buck Creek Marina seeking the winning bag of bass and the associated points towards qualifying for the 2017 Championship next October on Table Rock.
Coming out on top at the next to last event of the divisional season was the veteran team of Mark Sanders and Ronnie Curry. Their best five fish pushed the scales to a staggering 20.89 mark, showing they definitely made the correct adjustments throughout the day. Mark noted their SPORT BOATS USA KEY FOR SUCCESS involved umbrella rigs fairly shallow (10’-20’) on down the lake from Buck Creek. Their impressive stringer also netted them another Joe Bass Highest Finishing Skeeter Award as they fished from Mark’s 2014 Skeeter FX.
Dave and Gene Crisenberry landed second place honors with a 19.52 bag, bolstered by the Ozarks Chevrolet Big Bass of the event which weighed 5.27 pounds. Gene explained they too used “the rig” in 15’ of water. Although he noted they didn’t catch numbers of fish, it’s obvious the ones they did catch were the right ones!
It’s likely that no one has ever experienced the friendly chiding that Team Blevins faced by weighing in “only” 19.26 pounds of Bull Shoals bass. Given the total domination Eric and Dustin have shown thus far into the season, anything short of a victory seems to indicated an off day. Yet, there were 20 teams below them in the standings that would have willingly taken their place! Eric explained they stuck with the rig and crankbait bite in relatively shallow water, targeting areas both directions from the takeoff.
The next tournament will be March18th at 7:00 at Buck Creek Marina.
