Fresh off the 2019 Joe Bass Invitational at Truman Lake, 23 teams descended on Buck Creek Marina prepared to kick off the 2020 season with a strong finish and a solid points finish in anticipation of the Joe Bass Team Trails Invitational next October. As seems to be always true, anglers faced changing weather conditions as the area saw 3-5” of rain days before the cold overnight temperatures, clear skies, and no wind on tournament day. However, the Bull Shoals anglers are among the best in the nation, and the results prove it!
Firing a shot over the bow to serve as a warning for what the remainder of the season could bring was the veteran team of Buck Comstock and Greg Blair. The team is sponsored by Vexus Boats, Mercury, Hummingbird and Minn Kota. Their best five of nearly 60 keepers pushed the scales to 19.26 pounds, giving them a 3.5 pound margin over second place. Greg noted their Sport Boats USA Key to Success was fishing crankbaits shallow in the 6’-10’ range to amass their winning weight.
Rory Preis and Mark Politte teamed up to secure second place with a 15.94 bag. Their 4.97 pound kicker, the Ozark Chevrolet Big Bass of the day anchored their limit. They explained they fished jigs on a “junk” pattern of both shallow and deep banks with rock being a key ingredient.
Alan Tucker and Ron Weiss took third place honors with a 14.54 limit. They also fished jigs, filtering through nearly four dozen keepers to get to their final weight. They concentrated their efforts on steep banks working their baits through the 15’-25’ depth range.
Gary Daniel and Jay Oliver proved it pays to fish a Skeeter boat as they took the Sport Boats USA Highest Finishing Skeeter award by fishing jigs deep from Gary’s 2018 ZX250.
The next Bull Shoals Division event will be December 7 at 7:00 a.m. Be sure and show a bit early for breakfast burritos and coffee compliments of the crew at Buck Creek Marina!
We would also like to thank our newest Joe Bass sponsor Lakewoods Resort which will have rooms available for all the Joe Bass events.
