Tough Conditions at Lake O.
20 Teams gathered for the Kick-off event, as the word was out that Lake of the Ozarks is fishing tougher than a two dollar steak. Many in the field were scratching their heads as Late November fishing for most years is fairly predictable, but it was not so today or for about the last few weeks according to some of the locals. But as we all know, somebody figures them out.
Taking the top spot today was the team of Hunter Whiteley and Doug Smith. The team started the day close to Workman’s cove fishing points and channel banks with rock, up lake as far as the toll bridge. Hunter and Doug employed the “everything in the box” tactic to grind out their limit. Hunter reported catching keepers on the A-rig, Shakey-head worm, a swimbait and a jig. All fish being caught fairly shallow in 4 to 8 feet of water. In the end Hunter and Doug brought in a 5 fish limit weighing 15.32 pounds. Included in their bag was the second big bass of the tournament weighing 3.84 pounds. Hunter and Doug are sponsored by Nitro, Lew’s, Yum, Booyah and Bandit.
Taking second today was the defending division champions Nathan Oliver and Jamie Eynard. Nathan and Jamie kept it fairly simple, through the A-rig till your arm hurts, put it down, count to 10, and pick it back up. The team keyed on small cuts in the coves, working the A-rig down the middle of the pocket as the shad were off bank suspended. Their 5 fish limit came in just shy of the top spot, weighing 14.83 pounds. Nathan and Jamie are sponsored by Bassing Bob , Elite Angler, Merten’s Bait and Tackle, Omega Custom Tackle and Tombstone Tackle.
Finishing in third was the Team of Roger and Chase Fitzpatrick. Roger and Chase made a run up to the Grand Glaze arm to start their day and worked their way back towards Alhonna Resort, fishing A-rigs with Biospawn 3 inch swimbaits. Roger and Chase grinded up 5 keeper bites weighing 13.58 pounds. Roger said their last keeper came just minutes before weigh-in. “We had our life jackets on and the big motor Idling, and Chase popped our last keeper”. Roger an Chase sponsored by Biospawn, Chompers, Daiwa, Lowrance, Lunker Lure, Minn Kota, Omega Tackle, P-Line, Powerpole, Skeeter Boats, SportBoats USA, St, Croix Rods, TH Marine and Yamaha. By finishing third Roger won the SportBoats USA Skeeter incentive, fishing out of his 2019 FX 20.
Taking 4th place today was the team of Chuck Clutts Jr. and Ryne Borchett. The team also fished the A-rig, bringing in a 5 fish limit weighing 12.04 pounds. included in their limit was the Ozark Chevrolet Big Joe Bass weighing 4.52 pounds Ryne caught the Big fish off the corner of a condo dock near the dam on the A-rig.
