01/26/19 Bull Shoals

Finally! A tournament day with reasonably steady conditions leading up to the event.   Although the previous week saw a bit of oscillation in high and low temperatures, absent was the massive swing such as the one that faced anglers three weeks previously.  Instead, consistent cold days with even colder nights produced the first true winter conditions for the 28 teams that huddled in the warmth of Buck Creek Marina.  Thankfully, the cold foggy conditions transitioned to sun and warmth as anglers searched for the daily top prize and qualifying points for the Joe Bass Team Trails Championship at Truman Lake in October.

Solving the mystery was the team of Michael Cox and Tommy Skinner.  Their best five keepers pushed the scales to 22.78 pounds, a fantastic weight for a January event.  Michael shared their Sport Boats USA Key to Success which was slinging umbrella rigs on relatively shallow banks.  They caught fish throughout the day and culled through multiple keepers to compile the winning weight.

Finishing second was Eric and Dustin Blevins.  It was Eric’s turn to cough up some secrets as to how they amassed their 21.81 pounds.  Rumors included a 1/64th ounce squirrel tail jig on a float & fly setup, but Eric swore they caught their fish on a-rigs and crankbaits.  Topping off their bag was the Ozark Chevrolet Big Bass of the event; a 6.42 lunker which “supposedly” hit the rig on a midlake location.

Coming in third place for the day was Ed Young and Joey Penzo.  The duo wrangled 18.37 pounds to the weigh in scales.  Ed shared their fish succumbed to a jig and rig double team in 30+ feet of water.  They parsed through several fish to get to their final weight.  In addition, Ed and Joey took the Sport Boats USA Skeeter Bonus as they fished from Ed’s FX250.

The next event in the Bull Shoals Division is February 2rd at 7:00 am, Buck Creek Marina.
