05/06/18 Twain

Feast or Famine was the Rule of the Day!

29 teams showed up for the 2nd of six 154 Marine division Joe Bass Team Trail tournaments at Mark Twain Lake. The Lake was experiencing a Fast warm up, with afternoon water temps reaching the low 70s. Only problem was the weather conditions also brought crappie fishermen from all over the region, as the crappie were against the bank, and very easy to catch. This hampered many teams as creeks and coves became difficult to fish with all the boat traffic.

Taking the Top spot today was the team of Steve Hoots and Robin Hessling. The Diamond Residential Mortgage, J&J Marine sponsored team made a long run up one of the river tributaries with the intent of getting away from as many crappie anglers as possible. The team began their day throwing moving baits, crankbaits and buzz baits, to no avail, then switched to flipping jigs and plastics on rocky channel swings and began the grind, hitting every piece of visible cover in the area multiple times. Steve and Robin had 7 keeper bites on the day with their best 5 weighing 19.45 pounds. Included in their limit was the Ozark Chevrolet Big Joe Bass weighing 6.47 pounds. The 154 Marine Key to Success was the team’s commitment to the area they fished. Steve and Robin said they were going to be “Heroes or Zeroes!”

Coming in the second position was the team of Alan Parn and Dominic Perotti. Alan and Dominic used a different approach than the top team, they relied on fishing narrow cuts off channel swings in the mid lake area. The team flipped and pitched jigs and brush hogs to pole timber inside the cuts, with a very slow and methodical retrieve. Alan and Dominic had 6 keeper bites on the day with the better-quality fish biting after 12 o’clock. Their best 5 weighed in at 18.31 pounds.

Rounding out the top 3 spots today was the team of Keith Hendrix and Greg Zumwalt. The 2017 points champions, fresh off winning the first tournament of the division, were ready to keep their momentum moving forward. Keith and Greg fished Steep rocky channel swings banks in the mid-lake area, and found early success throwing spinnerbaits, but when the sun got higher and cloud cover dissipated, they switched up to pitching soft plastics to sparse visible cover. The team had 6 keeper bites on the day with their best 5 weighing 17.41 pounds.

29 teams, 64 fish weighed, 5 limits, 100% live release.
Our Next Mark Twain Division Tournament will be Sunday June 3rd. 6am take-off Robert Allen Ramp
