05/07/23 Stockton

Despite the calendar showing early May, the weather reeked of mid-June with temperatures soaring to around 90 degrees. Coupled with a strong south wind, anglers faced some warm bumpy conditions for the second even of the Joe Bass Stockton Division. The 61 teams that blasted off from Orleans Trail Marina departed with hopes of a winning stringer and valuable qualifying points for the Joe Bass Invitational to be held at Stockton Lake next fall. They returned with over 618 pounds of Stockton bass, predominately males as the larger females were hard to come by

Mark Moody and Kyle Kiister bested the field as they dropped a 15.78 stringer on the scales. The duo noted their Albers Marine, Inc. Keys to Success included an Carolina-rig, a floating worm and a Senko. Mark and Kyle had a tremendous day as they estimated they went through 3-4 limits to get to their final weight.

Jeff Gilbert and Mat Morey paired up to take second place honors for the day. Jeff explained they fished shaky heads with a variety of soft plastics pitched super shallow. They also reported catching a ton of fish, although keepers were hard to come by, as they culled only a few times to bump up to their 15.75 pound weight.

Tyler Weaver and Luke Routh followed up their April win with a solid third place finish. Their 15.10 pound limit fell to a combination of creature baits, swimbaits and topwater. Luke noted they caught their keepers in spurts, with a quick start in the morning, followed by a bit of a lull, then fishing picked back up late in the day.

Tyler and James Eagan tripled up as they added the NAPA Big Bass and Top Skeeter honors to their 6th place overall finish. The big fish, a 5.84 lunker, was caught Live Scoping a stump in 8’ of water and made a nice addition to their 2019 ZX225 Skeeter livewell.

Special thanks to Taylor Grubaugh Chevrolet, Buick & GMC in West Plains for sponsoring the live release boat.

The third event of the Stockton Division will be June 4th with a 6:00 takeoff from Orleans Trail. Plan ahead as ramps may be busy and it’s to our benefit to take off on time.
