06/11/23 Mark Twain

Feast or famine pretty much sums up the results of tournament number 3 of 5 for the Mark Twain Division sponsored by 154 Marine. Of the 41 participating teams, there were 8 limits, 11 goose eggs.

Conditions;
Rain most of the morning, becoming cloudy with a steady northwest wind at 15 to 20mph.
Lake level; 604.50 w minimal generation. Normal pool 606.0
Water clarity; Clear conditions throughout the lower end to mid-lake. slight stain in tributary arms
Water temps; mid 70’s to low 80’s

Finishing in the top spot today was the team of Don and Gary McFetridge. This veteran duo has been fishing Mark Twain Lake since the late 80’s and undoubtedly their history on the pond helped them adjust to the changing conditions today and bring home the “W”. Don stated that the fish have been moving a lot over the last 2 weeks, leaving their spawning areas and staging on secondary and main lake points although not yet “stacking up”. So the team rotated around several main lake and secondary points on the lower end of the lake. The team fished 2 primary baits in the 8 to 12 foot range, a Stike King 1.5 Squarebill and a texas rigged worm in Green Pumpkin. The worm worked better early, then the crankbait shined later in the day, when the wind kicked up. The teams 5 fish limit weighed in at 16.82 pounds.

Taking the runner-up position by less than 5 ounces (AGAIN) was the team of Charlie Kunkle and Keith Williams. Charlie and Keith targeted secondary points with chunk rock and scattered stumps early, catching some keepers on jigs early, then found success with a shallow crankbait and a brushog on main lake points. The 154 Marine sponsored team weighed in a 5 fish limit weighing 16.52 pounds.

Finishing in the bronze position today was the team of Eric and Chris Power. Eric and Chris caught their limit weighing 15.73 pounds fishing Crock-O-Gator D.C worms on secondary points in 5 to 10 feet of water, from the Dam area to the 107 bridges. Eric and Chris are sponsored by 154 Marine, Crock-O-Gator baits, H2 Bait Design & Mfg. Interstate Batteries, WOO! Tungsten and Hawg Caller Spinnerbaits.

Hotdogs were provided by Mark Twain Lake Fishing Intel and Hickman’s IGA.

Host lodging at Mark Twain is Country Inn Resort. (573)267-3800.
