Summertime can mean a strong bite for Truman anglers as bass set up in the trees tops to ambush shad schools or lock on to shallow cover on the flats. For those willing to confront blistering temperatures, fish can be fairly predictable. However, 91 teams faced a lake that had seen a quick rise followed by a draw down, windy conditions with direction shifting from day to day, and an increase of pleasure boaters on the lower portion of the lake, all making for trying times when attempting to battle for a win and qualifying points for the Joe Bass Invitational to be held at Stockton Lake next fall. Despite the warm water, anglers did a magnificent job of fish care as over 700 pounds of bass were returned to the lake via the Taylor Grubaugh Chevrolet, Buick & GMC Live Release boat.
Proving that back-to-back division points championships is no fluke, Matt Gunter and Kelly Nunn bested the field with a strong 18.16 pound limit. Their bag included the NAPA Big Bass of the event, a stud 5.90 largemouth, just a tad under the 6.76 pound big bass Matt and son Kane weighed at Pomme the day prior! Kelly and Matt noted their Hobbytime Motorsports Key to Success focused on a buzzbait bite early followed by tough conditions the rest of the day. Kelly explained their limit fish didn’t come until 1:30 after they had moved around to a variety of different spots after leaving their starting area.
Greg Askew and Terry Case used their years of experience to secure a second place finish. Their day started off with a kicker fish weighing 5.45 but also included another good fish that didn’t make it all the way to the boat. However, 17.65 pounds of bass made it the livewell after hitting a mix of jigs, swimbaits, and brush hogs. They also noted a quality over quantity situation as they caught six keepers scattered throughout the day.
Brad Jelinek and Brock Reinkemeyer rounded out the top three. They brought a 17.26 limit to the scales. Breaking from the others in the top three, the duo reported catching 12 keepers while fishing jigs and worms on a variety of spots with depths ranging from 6’ to 20’.
Ralph Laster and Glenn Baston took Top Skeeter honors but hightailed to the comforts of the truck’s air conditioning before details could be gathered.

The fourth event of the Truman Division will be July 23 with a 6:00 takeoff from Shawnee Bend. Be sure and show up early to ensure you have plenty of time to check in and launch prior to take-off.
