07/22/23 Pomme

The penultimate tournament of the Pomme de Terre division brought a lake on the rise from rains earlier in the week along with clear summertime conditions (read tons of pleasure boaters on the lake!).  The change in lake level seemed to be the primary culprit for an abnormally tough bite, as the deeper locations seemed to be a bit off for the majority of the field.  However, 43 teams weighed in nearly 300 pounds of Pomme bass, and a big bass pushing seven pounds is a brute anytime of year.  Just as importantly, every fish counts towards qualifying points for the Joe Bass Invitational to be held at Stockton Lake this fall.

Special recognition is due Taylor Grubaugh Chevrolet, Buick & GMC for their support of the release boat, a key to returning the bass to the lake in good health.

Besting the field was Michael Bray and Nathan Klepper.  Their five fish limit rocked the scales to a stout 17.41 pounds, helped along with a 5.62 kicker.  Mike and Nathan reported they struggled for bites but they made up for that in quality.  Their  TNT Quick Shop Key to Success was working Chompers Magnum Hawg worms through brushpiles in 10’-15’ of water.

Local stick Terry Bradley paired up with Jason Swanigan to secure the runner up position.  They brought 14.28 pounds of fish to the scales.  They also targeted the brush piles, working them with a mix of jigs and worms.  Included in their bag was the NAPA Big Bass of the event, a monster 6.84 largemouth.  They caught the goliath using their Garmin FFS to target the fish that was shadowing a bait ball in open water.

Division sponsor Kevin Snyder teamed with Nick Borchers to round out the top three.  Team TNT Quick Shop worked a slow pattern of fishing brush around isolated docks scattered around the lake.  Their bait of choice was a big worm worked repeatedly through the cover to trigger strikes.  Their approach gave them a 13.98 stringer for the day.

Cody Campbell and Quinten Carr padded their 5th place check by taking Top Skeeter honors for the event, fishing from Cody’s 2021 FXR21.

The final event of the Pomme de Terre Division will be August 26 with a 6:00 takeoff from The Harbor.  Please note; let’s avoid the hassles and make sure we pay our launch fees when using the facilities at The Harbor.
