Clear skies and warm temperatures greeted the 92 teams that launched from Shawnee Bend with hopes of a great day on the water. Storms that passed through the area on Thursday muddied up some of the upper reaches of the lake, but overall conditions appeared to be decent. However, the results showed the conditions to be deceiving as only 38 limits were brought to the scales with an average weight per team right on the seven pound mark. However, with the “every fish counts” approach towards qualifying for the Invitational to be held at Stockon Lake in October, anglers pushed through to weigh as much as possible on a stingy day. Thanks to the Taylor Grubaugh Chevrolet, Buick & GMC Live Release boat, over 640 pounds of live bass were released back into the lake.
Proving that experience counts, Bryce Reider and Mike Edrington notched another win with a strong 18.29 pound limit. The long-time team shared their Hobbytime Motorsports Key to Success was taking advantage of an early bite as they worked brush hogs and big worms to amass their winning weight. They targeted shallow cover in the 5’-6’ range to make a late season charge in the division points race.
Joseph Hull and Brett Fickle added to a strong season by taking second place honors. Their 17.59 bag included the NAPA Big Bass of the event, a stud 5.35 kicker, providing a premium on a stingy day. The duo noted they leaned on a big worm with four of their five coming early, similar to the winner’s pattern. However, it took until late the afternoon to bag their limit fish. They worked a variety of spots ranging from inches of water out to the 15’ depth range.
Local legend Jerry McCutchen and Kevin Smith proved true to form, bagging a 17.00 pound limit where others struggled to boat keepers. Also true to form, their fish fell to jigs and brush hogs pitched in the 6’-10’ depth range. It took the pair all day to get to five, but the quality was there to give them a spot high in the check line.
Tom McGovern and Larry Wright added to their 11th place check by landing Top Skeeter honors. They paired a square bill with a big worm in the 1’-3’ depths to put bass in their Skeeter bass boat.
Host lodging for Joe Bass Team Trail on Truman lake is Rivers End Motel & RV Park.
The final event of the Truman Division will be August 27 with a 6:00 takeoff from Shawnee Bend. Be sure and show up early to ensure you have plenty of time to check in and launch prior to take-off.
