30 teams showed up to Mark Twain lake for the fifth of six division tournaments sponsored by 154 Marine. Early dock talk was that there were groups of fish still biting on the lake and that the lower end structure bite was the best, teams dedicated to bank fishing we’re struggling.
Overnight storms cooled the area down into the mid 70s at take off, a nice break from the hundred plus temperatures that the area had seen over the last few days. However, the call was made for a 2 PM 1 hour early weigh in on Sunday to minimize the stress on the fish and fisherman.
Taking the top spot today was the team of Jimmy Coyner and Keith Ostrander. Jimmy and Keith use their typical run and gun style looking for active fish hitting over 25 spots in the lower end to mid lake fishing worms, jigs and a deep diving crank bait. Jimmy and Keith’s best 5 pushed the scales down to 19.48 pounds almost 3 pounds better than the second-place team.
Jimmy and Keith are sponsored by a 154 marine and bull’s-eye bait and tackle.
The 154 Marine key to success again was the new Minkota Ultrex trolling motor with spot lock. The team could line up the structure they were wanting to fish hit the spot lock button and keep their boat in position. Jimmy also was the highest finishing Skeeter owner fishing from his 2007 21l.
Taking the second spot Sunday with 16.55 pounds was the team of Dave Phelps and Danny Altmiller. Dave and Danny also fished the mid-lake area with big worms and jigs near points with brush or standing timber. Included in their sack was the second Big Bass of the tournament weighing 4.72 pounds.
Finding the check line in third place Sunday was the defending points champions, Keith Hendrix and Greg Zumwalt. Keith and Greg downsized their baits, fishing Senkos and shakey head worms to grind out a limit weighing 15.16 pounds. Keith and Greg are sponsored by 154 Marine, Gene Larew, HPW Lures, JC Auto & Truck Parts, Dyna Grow Seed, Crop Rotation Service and Jack’s Harbor Marine.
Jason Kiser and Steve Schaefer Caught a few keepers early Sunday then struggled for a while before pulling up to a main lake point, slinging a 10” power worm across the point, and BOOM the fight was on! After a solid struggle and expert net job, Jason and Steve slipped the Ozark Chevrolet Big Joe Bass into their livewell! The chubby girl weighed in at 5.97 pounds. Jason and Steve are sponsored by Ardent, Hannibal Heating, Hickman’s IGA and Mark Twain Distributing.
The season Finale for the Mark Twain Division, sponsored by 154 Marine is August 20, 6am Take off Robert Allen Ramp.
