Thankfully a front that passed through the Truman area on Saturday brought cooler temperatures for tournament day, a welcome change to the stifling heat that had gripped the region for days. The change-up seemed to effect the quality of bites, but 79 teams still brough nearly 575 pounds of bass to the scales. With teams pushing to the end of the season, more than ever the “every fish counts” approach was in affect as anglers pressed to qualify for the Invitational to be held at Stockon Lake in October.
Thanks to the Taylor Grubaugh Chevrolet, Buick & GMC Live Release boat which allowed the bass to be released back into the lake.
Truman gurus Charley and Chris Thomas finished the season with another win. Their 17.63 pound back fell to a variety of presentations, as they shared their Hobbytime Motorsports Key to Success included a squarebill, jig, and brush hog. They plied areas both shallow and deep all day to catch their five keepers.
Kenny Sloan and Brendon Mick narrowly missed the win as their limit weighed in at 17.40 pounds. They worked big worms along with a jig to catch their fish. They also had to mix it up, as they caught a few shallow along with the balance out deeper.
The Brothers Baker rounded out the top three. Bryan and Darren narrowly wrested the last podium spot as their 16.77 pound limit bested fourth place by just .06 pounds. Pushing them over the top was the NAPA Big Bass of the event, a stud 5.64 kicker. They also took top Skeeter honors, as they used Bryan’s 2015 FX20 to sling squarebills, spinnerbaits and big worm to catch their fish.
