Hot steamy conditions greeted the anglers that gathered at Shawnee Bend for the culmination of the 2021 Tackle HD Joe Bass Truman Division. Scorching weather made for some uncomfortable fishing, but the salty anglers proved their mettle as several strong limits were brought to the scales. Every fish proved valuable as they represented qualifying points for the Tackle HD Joe Bass Invitational to be held at Bucksaw Resort and Marina this fall as well as determining the season’s points champions.
Taking top honors was the veteran team of Marty Watson and Doug Long. Their 20.58 stringer was anchored by the Ozark Chevrolet Big Bass, a lunker 6.53 pound largemouth. Doug and Marty shared their Tackle HD Key to Success was working spinnerbaits and flipping tubes to trees in 2-12’ with shad being present a must. They also took home the highest finishing Skeeter bonus as they fished from Doug’s 2020 FXR21.
Dene White and Joe Dorcy took the runner up position with a 18.63 bag. Joe noted they fished deeper, dragging football jigs and worms on the bottom in 12-16’ of water. The early bite was key to them, as they had their weight before noon.
Bryce Rieder and Mike Edrington rounded out the top three with a solid 18.15 pound stringer. They mixed a worm with a brush hog, pitching to targets in the 5-12’ depth range.
With the Truman Division complete, don’t forget the Last Chance event, an opportunity to get in an extra event towards qualifying criteria as well as a chance to scout out the championship waters. The Last Chance derby will be Saturday September 25th with a 7:00am takeoff from Bucksaw. Be aware of the required launch fee at the Bucksaw ramp.
