12/16/23 Bull Shoals

Cloudy weather was present for the 38 teams that took off from beautiful Buck Creek Marina for the second derby in the 2004 Bull Shoals division. Albeit a bit chilly, the rain held off during the tournament and the sun even popped out for a few seconds! Low water levels and a front pushing through had anglers hoping to find fish concentrated in preparation for a winter feeding binge. With anticipation levels high, teams were hunting for daily bragging rights that would put their names at the top of the Window World Leaderboard while accruing valuable qualifying points for the Joe Bass Invitational to be held next fall.

Getting details from the top teams was as difficult as the fishing, but Wyatt Marler and Nick Lawler said they used a Damiki rig to put five Bull Shoals bass on the scales that topped out at 18.53 pounds. They did note their Mid America RV Key to Success was working shad-oriented fish deep, with some as far down as the 60’ range. They were one of the few that didn’t suggest they struggled with getting bites, as they boated 3-4 limits on an all-day bite.

Tyler Duggins and Bryan Bauer landed in the runner up spot with a stringer weighing 18.46 pounds. They stayed pretty tight-lipped as well, suggesting they slow-rolled spinnerbaits on windy areas to catch their fish. Their bag was helped along with the second place big bass, a toad 5.31 pounder that bolstered their final weight.

Wes Rogers and Henry MaGuffee rounded out the top three. They joined the fun during the interview process, suggesting they used ice jigs painted blaze orange. Perhaps there was a tint of crawdad orange on the crankbaits they were slinging? Their third place bag pushed the scales to 17.21.

Mark Mahaffey fished with Sam Mahaffey to take Top Skeeter honors by fishing from their Skeeter Boats  bass boat. In addition they also put the NAPA big bass of the day, a 5.67 pounder, in Mark’s 2022 ZXR20, earning them a double paycheck for the day.

The third event of the Bull Shoals Division will take place January 6th with a 7:00am takeoff from Buck Creek Marina.
