Hendrix and Zumwalt win Again!
Newcomers Weber and Phillips take Second
Coyner and Ostrander Find Third
34 teams gathered for the 3rd of six Joe Bass tournaments at Mark Twain Lake.
Early dock talk was that keepers were fairly easy to catch, with many males guarding fry, but quality bites were difficult, as the bigger females were for the most part in the “Post Spawn Funk”.
“When Its Your day, Its Your Day!” Those were the words uttered by Keith Hendrix and Greg Zumwalt as this team experienced a “Dream Day” on the water.
Both team members were busy during the week prior and only put in a few hours of practice on Saturday and that time was hindered by strong thunder storms and high winds making it difficult to fish most of the areas the team wanted to fish. Looks like that turned out to be a blessing, as they didn’t burn any bites in their primary areas and with the wind shifting to the north westerly direction made their areas more fishable.
At take off the team went to an area in mid-lake they knew had fish and promptly put a limit in the boat. However, it wasn’t the quality they had hoped for. So, the team began a milk run hoping to find post spawn females outside spawning pockets and creeks. Keith and Greg fished Yum Dingers and Big Bite Trick Sticks in 3 to 7 feet of water around a mixture of chunk rock and brush and found the “Mother Load”. Keith and Greg had 20 keepers on the day and their best 5 weighed an astonishing 25.46 pounds besting the second place team by over 8 pounds! Included in their sack was the Ozark Chevrolet Big Joe Bass weighing 6.14 pounds! Keith and Greg are sponsored by 154 Marine, Gene Larew, HPW Lures, JC Auto and Truck Parts, Crop Rotation Service, Dyna Gro Seed and Jack’s Harbor Marine.
Newcomers to Joe Bass Team Trail is the team of Steve Weber and Sam Phillips. Steve and Sam Made the run down to Lick Creek and fished Main and Secondary points with Ozark Tackle 10 inch worms and Senko style baits, had a limit within the first hour then moved to Indian Creek and upgraded their limit Carolina rigging their baits on points and mixed in a Strike King 2.5 Square bill. With about an hour to go, the team made the call to move up to the mid lake area in hopes a last minute upgrade. Well their decision proved to be a good one as they boated a 3 pounder in the closing minutes, bringing their final weight of 17.01 pounds good enough for second place also making Steve the highest finishing Skeeter owner.
Taking the third position today was the team of Jim Coyner and Keith Ostrander. Jim and Keith did what works best for them this time of year, Run and Gun. The 154 Marine and Bullseye Bait and Tackle sponsored team fished from the dam area and Lick Creek all the way back to the split of South and Middle Fork fishing Jigs and soft plastics around points and brush hitting as many as 25 spots on the day looking for active fish. In the end the teams best 5 weighed 16.74 pounds.
34 teams 130 fish weighed 19 limits.
Our next 154 Marine division tournament will be June 24th 6am take off Robert Allen Ramp.
