Transition is the name of the game for a spring event, and the kickoff derby of the 2021 Tackle HD Joe Bass Team Trail season held true with a rapid draw down coupled with volatile spring weather that greeted nearly 80 teams that gathered at Orleans Trail Marina. Each team departed takeoff with a winter’s worth of anticipation of a heavy stringer and qualifying points for the Tackle HD Joe Bass Invitational to be held at Bucksaw Resort and Marina this fall. The skill of the local anglers did not disappoint as 51 limits were brought to the scales and over 14 pounds was needed to finish in the money.
Local stick Robert Shackelford teamed with Dusty Richardson to top the field with a solid five bass limit weighing 18.76 pounds. Despite reports of drop shots, bubble gum finesse worms and the like, the truth final rang clear as Dusty reported their Tackle HD Key to Success was working an Eiron Breaker jig shallow along steep banks to amass their weight.
Team Thomas, Charley and Chris, took the runner up position with a 17.77 pound bag. They worked the lower lake with jigs and spinnerbaits, getting a limit by 7:30. However, two of their kickers came in the final moments of the tournament, proving one needs to “run through the finish line”.
Dan Cox and Tim Kastning rounded out the top three with a 17.19 stringer. Dan noted their fish came shallow on a 7” red worm. Adding to their purse, Dan and Tim took the Highest Finishing Skeeter bonus fishing from Dan’s 2002 SX190 Skeeter.
The Ozark Chevrolet Big Bass, a 5.73 largemouth, was caught by the team of Tim Hintenach and Travis Williams. Tim Hintenach also wins and additional $100 for having a ARVEST Credit Card.
The second event of the Stockton Division will take place May 2, with a 6:00am takeoff from Orleans Trail. Your patronage shows in the continued growth of the Stockton Division!
